TEMPORARY PLANNING INTERN
This temporary planning intern position is expected to last 3 months. The hourly pay rate for the internship will be set at the time of hire based on county pay guidelines, educational level, and experience. (anticipated rate is $10+ per hour)

POSITION PURPOSE:
The Planning Intern position is designed to equip current students interested in pursuing a career in the planning profession with practical, real-world work experience to help them transition into their professional career. The incumbents exercise independent judgment and initiative. Work is evaluated through conferences, reports, results, observation, and assessment by a higher authority.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists in the fundamental tasks of design and implementation of data collection systems; compiles and analyzes data; assists in the preparation of all or portions of various planning documents relating to the comprehensive plan; assists in the public presentation or dissemination of planning materials and information. Prepares maps, graphics, and other special charts as necessary.
Participates in research to secure a variety of planning data such as land use, population density, zoning, housing, and availability of community services and compiles/tabulates the data collected into presentable formats.
Work with the county’s GIS (ArcMap 9.1).
An interest in New Urbanism, Traditional Neighborhood Design, and Transit Oriented Development is desirable.
May collect, organize, and post information on the Department’s Web Pages.
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the basic principles and accepted practices of public planning.
Knowledge of basic regulations governing development.
Knowledge of basic standard statistical principles and methods.
Understanding computer software including databases, spreadsheets, GIS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Currently attending a school that offers continued education.
A minimum of two years of college course work seeking a degree in planning, architecture, public administration, geography, or a related field.
Strong consideration will be given to students required to complete a professional internship as part of an urban planning program.
