Databases A-Z Databases by Subject Local Links Need Help?
The Lee County Library System subscribes to electronic databases and indexes, many of which contain full text articles from magazines, newspapers and other periodicals. Some of these databases are available only if you are in a library, some are available inside the library and outside the library with your Library Card Barcode.

From time to time, library patrons are not able to access some or all of our databases.  There are many reasons why this might happen; below are listed some of the possible reasons and things you can try to gain access.

Home Access

Home access should be available 24/7.  Click on the Home link next to the name of the database you want to use.
You must have a valid library card from one of the branches of the Lee County Library System to use the databases.   Information on how to obtain a card can be found here:  http://www.lee-county.com/library/library/card.htm.
On the back of your library card is a barcode with a 14 digit number. You must enter the complete 14 digit number without spaces.
Sometimes, if too many people are using a database at the same time, there will be a login screen instead of automatic access to the database.
Due to our database license agreements, remote access to databases is NOT allowed to users outside Lee County, even if those patrons have reciprocal borrowing privileges for other materials.

Library Access

Click on the “Library” link next to the name of the database you want to use
This way you will not need to use your library barcode number to gain access to the databases.
And you will have access to other databases that are not available from home.

Browsers

Recommended browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator browser version 6.0 or higher.
EarthLink customers are having problems with EarthLink stripping of the port designation from the URL.  Contact EarthLink and request that they stop stripping off the port designation. The port for our catalog service is 8080. The link to our catalog should appear as followed: http://www.leecoipac.leegov.com:8080

Browser Settings

Cookies: Is your browser set to accept cookies? Some Web sites store information in a small text file on your computer. This file is called a cookie. Browsers generally enable cookies by default, but you can check/adjust the settings by doing the following:
For Internet Explorer 6.0 (recommended), look under Tools, Internet Options, Privacy. An explanation of what the settings mean/do can be found in IE 6.x's Help Index under "cookies, changing settings."
For Netscape 7.x (recommended), look under Edit, Preferences, Privacy & Security, Cookies. An explanation of what the settings mean/do can be found in Netscape 7.x's Help Index under "privacy -- settings."
Popup Blocker Settings: If you are using a browser or firewall that blocks popup windows, you will need to change the settings to allow popups either temporarily, for a particular site, or for the duration of your session.  If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2, you will need to change the Popup Blocker settings to allow popup windows.  Google Toolbar and Yahoo! Toolbar both block pop-ups. You will need to adjust the settings or temporarily disable pop-up blocking.
Java: If you use Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Internet Explorer 6.0, you will need to install the Java Runtime Environment separately as this browser version does not install it automatically. Download and install the Java Runtime Environment for your operating system at:
Windows: http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp
MAC: http://www.apple.com/java/
Internet Explorer 5.x: Go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options. Click on the Security tab. Select the Internet icon at the top. Set the security Low. Next choose the Advanced tab. Enable Java.

Firewalls

If you have a firewall on your computer - either through your operating system, anti-virus software or other software - please adjust your firewall settings to allow traffic from the following URL: http://209.26.126.14/rpa/webauth.exe
If you still have problems accessing the databases, you may need to turn off your firewall software in order to use them.
There are reported problems with Norton Internet Security including Norton Personal Firewall & ZoneAlarm Pro.  You will need to disable them or set restrictions to low during the duration of your access to the Subscription Databases.
You also need to make sure that your PC's calendar and clock are set correctly as this can prevent you from getting into the secure authentication page.

Cache

Clearing your cache can significantly improve the speed and performance of your browser. The following procedures provide steps to clear the cache memory for the two most popular browsers.
Internet Explorer 6.0

1. From the top menu bar, click Tools, and select Internet Options.
2. Click Delete Cookies, then O.K
3. Click Delete Files, then O.K.
4. Click OK.
Netscape 6.x and 7.x

1. From the top menu bar, click Edit, and select Preferences.
2. Click Advanced.
3. Click Cache.
4. Click Clear Memory Cache button.
5. Click the Clear Disk Cache button.
6. Click OK.

Adobe Acrobat Reader

Some of our services provide article page images in Adobe PDF (Portable Article File) format. To view these articles, you need Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your system. If you do not have it, you can download Adobe Acrobat Reader for free.

Bookmarks

You must access subscription databases ONLY from: http://www.lee-county.com/library or a subject page on the Library webpage.  Accessing from any other link or bookmark, WILL corrupt your cookies file and you will not be able to access remote databases, likely you will end up with excessive browser errors or blank pages.

Download Accelerators

All download managers or download accelerators should be turned off or disabled when connecting to LCLS databases.  Examples of such services that should be disabled or turned off include: Speed Bit GetRight, Netscape's Smartdownload and GetBot. Software such as RealDownload or ad-blocking software can also interfere with Remote Access.

Refresh

You may need to click on your browsers refresh button to load updated information and links.
